Twitter is a popular social media platform with around 329 million users, and that number will likely reach over 340 million by 2024. The platform allows users to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions in short messages with a broad audience.

A-list celebrities, influencers, professional athletes, government officials, major corporations and average people often use Twitter daily to stay updated on breaking news, global events and other trending topics.

The social media site is known for its ever-changing trends, and now the app will tailor content to match user preferences. For example, if you watch the NFL, you can visit the #explore page after the game to catch up on game scores and player highlights.

Here are some of the topics trending on Twitter this week.

1. #NationalVoterRegistrationDay

National Voter Registration Day takes place on Tuesday, September 20. It’s an annual “nonpartisan civic holiday” in the United States that encourages users to check their current voter registration status. Twitter includes some information about voting for its users, too — for example, it can help users register to vote if they:

  • Just turned 18
  • Recently became a U.S. citizen
  • Changed party affiliation
  • Changed your name

Additionally, the Twitter trend includes a “What You Need to Know” section with crucial information about how to get started with registration.

2. #NFTDay

Cryptocurrency enthusiasts and individual investors are recognzing NFT Day, a celebration of the creation and use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Over 37,000 users tweeted about NFT Day, highlighting the increasing popularity of the digital asset.

Some crypto firms are celebrating the day by encouraging Twitter users to enter a random drawing to win a free NFT. For example, Nifty’s, an NFT-focused social media platform, is giving away a LooneyTunes NFT Bitcoin Sign Eyes Tweety Avatar to one lucky Twitter user.

3. Erica Banks

Erica Banks, also known by her Twitter name “FLOW QUEEN”, is an American rapper. Many users are discussing and reacting to controversial comments Banks recently made online. Essentially, the rapper mentioned that her friends need to “look a certain way” if they accompany her to a club.

Banks posted a video with these comments on her official Instagram story. She suggests that if her friends aren’t “thick” enough, their hair is not “long” enough or they’re “skinny”, she would not want them to join her for a night out. Some users are angry with Banks’ comments, stating that people care more about the way someone looks or what they wear compared to their personality.

4. #tuesdayvibe

Twitter users have a sense of community, so it’s no surprise that basic hashtags and trends such as #tuesdayvibe become popular during the week. Twitter users are sharing motivational quotes, aesthetic photos and other content on Tuesday, September 20.

It’s also common for users to share GIFs or funny memes in their tweets to entertain their followers or any other users scrolling through #tuesdayvibe tweets.

5. #BeyondFast

NVIDIA GeForce, a popular brand in the gaming community, announced the release of the new GeForce RTX 40 Series. The company used #BeyondFast to promote its new line of graphics cards, demonstrating how it will provide high-performance graphics for customers.

The brand also has a pinned tweet with information about entering a sweepstakes, where users have unlimited chances to win a new GeForce RTX 40 Series. Users have to retweet any new GeForce post, tag a friend and comment #BeyondFast for a chance to win.

6. MacKinnon

Nathan MacKinnon, a professional hockey player in the NHL, just became the highest paid player in the league’s history after signing a contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche.

It’s an 8-year deal for an AAV (average annual value) of $12.6 million. In total, MacKinnon will receive $100.8 million. Users discuss MacKinnon and his statistics, with many users claiming that he’s an unstoppable offensive force on the ice, a truly elite player and one of the best passers in the league.

7. Don Lemon

CNN host Don Lemon had a recent interview with royal commentator and scholar Hilary Fordwich. This comes after Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8.

During the interview, Lemon asks Fordwich if the royal family plans on paying slave reparations. Lemon commented on the British Royal Family’s wealth after Prince William inherited his father’s $1 billion estate. After the queen’s passing, many people took to social media to comment on her legacy, which is somewhat controversial. Like Lemon, some Twitter users are asking if the UK is responsible for these reparations due to the negative impacts of British colonialism.

8. Space Force

The U.S. Space Force revealed its new official song, titled Semper Supra, at the Air Force Association’s 2022 Air, Space and Cyber Conference. Twitter users are commenting on the song, some even making fun of the song choice and calling it a “parody”.

The Space Force is a branch of the U.S. military and was established in December 2019 under the Trump administration. Some users mentioned they had forgotten the Space Force existed, but were reminded of it once the official Space Force Twitter account announced its official song and the topic was trending.

9. #Hellraiser

Hulu’s official Twitter account posted a new trailer for an upcoming movie called Hellraiser, available to stream on October 7. Clive Barker, a famous writer in the Horror genre, wrote the story of Hellraiser.

It’s a horror/thriller flick featuring a young woman who is trying to solve an enigmatic puzzle box and escape the sadistic, supernatural forces that come with it.
