Many of you have probably hit a turning point in your lives when you realize you’re not where you want to be. This is a normal realization for many people, especially if you’ve recently lost someone you love to either death, a broken friendship or a failed relationship.

Maybe you lost or left your job, moved to a new place or have simply had an epiphany. Whatever the case, if you feel your life needs change and a new path to follow, it’s time to learn how to reinvent yourself.

Reinventing yourself isn’t something to be ashamed of. It shows you’re self-aware enough to know what you want out of life and how to get it.

To do this, you have to act — fast. The longer you sit around and dwell on what’s not going right in your life, the longer you will waste valuable time. Figure out how to reinvent yourself by first recognizing what it is you want to change about your life, then create an action plan.

It’s never too late to change your life by reinventing yourself. You only live one life, so make the most of it in a way that sets you up on a path towards happiness and success. Read on for three steps on how to reinvent yourself and a few book recommendations for some extra help!

Envision Your Future

It all starts with a clear vision and a self-assessment. Think about the person you want to be and what it is you want to change about your current life. Is it your career? Your relationships? Yourself? Maybe it’s all of the above that needs some work. Whatever you feel needs change, create a vision for your future after you’ve accepted full responsibility for where you’re at in life and who you currently are.

Imagine what it is you need to leave behind to focus on what’s ahead. Then imagine what’s in your future. Think people, places, things and more.

Now you have a clear picture and an idea of the path you need to take. Steve Chandler’s book called “Reinventing Yourself” is a great guide to help you become the person you’ve always wanted to be, while also teaching you techniques that will allow you to live to your fullest potential.

Write About Your Future

Now that you’ve imagined your future it’s time to write about it. Where do you live? What do you do? Who do you spend your time with?

Write down everything you can until you feel there’s nothing left. Then go back to it now and then and add to it if you have a clearer picture. These images and snippets will also become your goals for your future.

Keep your values, passions and identity close to you during this time of reinvention, and carefully keep them in mind as you construct your attainable goals. Anyone can set goals, but you want to set goals you can achieve.

Learn how to reach every goal you set in Nick Hall’s book, “I Know How to Set Goals, So Why Don’t I Achieve Them?” You’ll also read about the neuroscience and psychology behind goal-setting, which will help you fully understand the importance of achievable goals.

Make Your Future Your Reality

Once you accept the things you need to change, envision your future and set attainable goals, it’s time to reinvent yourself. Let go of who you were and the things that held you back, and proactively attack each of your goals — one-by-one. Know that you’ll face unexpected challenges and undoubtedly make mistakes, but whatever happens, keep going.

Keep your eye on the prize, and don’t lose focus on your new future. Train yourself to handle challenges with a more solution-oriented mindset, so you don’t fall into a self-pity hole that you can’t get out of.

Know failure is inevitable as proven in Guy Spier’s book called “The Education of a Value Investor.” However, Spier, a prominent investment manager, is living proof that you can make mistakes in life and still turn it around to become your best self. He’s a true success story and a great role-model for anyone who’s thinking about reinvention. With success comes failure — and vice versa.

Start Now

Don’t wait for your future to find you because it may not. It’s possible to achieve change in your life, but it all starts with you. Accept your story, and determine what needs to change. Then envision your future, set achievable goals and put your plan into action.

Don’t settle for anything less than the best life you can live. Choose the path of reinvention, and forge your way towards a better, more fulfilling life!
