The Best Gear and Special Optics for Viewing A Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse is an incredible experience that you’ll remember long after the sky returns to normal. For a few brief minutes, the Moon can completely cover the Sun, turning daylight into an eerie twilight and revealing the Sun’s outer atmosphere. Watching this rare event is exciting on its own, but the right technology can make it even more fun by helping you safely view, photograph and appreciate details you might otherwise miss. 

How Often Do Total Solar Eclipses Happen

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun and its shadow falls across Earth. Because the Moon’s orbit is tilted by about five degrees compared to Earth’s path around the Sun, the three bodies do not line up for an eclipse every month. Instead, eclipses occur during specific “eclipse seasons” roughly six months apart. 

A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth roughly once every year or two. The catch is that totality is visible only along a relatively narrow path created by the Moon’s darkest shadow, called the umbra. A total eclipse is much rarer, with any given spot on Earth’s surface experiencing totality only about once every 366 years on average. 

The August 12, 2026, eclipse is a good example. Totality was visible across parts of northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and northeastern Portugal, while much of Europe, northwestern Africa, Canada and parts of the United States saw only a partial eclipse.

What Happens During a Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse begins with a partial phase, as the Moon gradually covers the Sun. The sky may darken, temperatures can drop and the surroundings can start to feel like twilight.

Just before totality, you may see Baily’s beads, what looks like small beads along the moon where small points of sunlight shine through valleys on the Moon’s edge. Then comes the dramatic “diamond ring” effect.

During totality, the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright surface, revealing the Sun’s glowing corona. Stars and planets may become visible, and the horizon can look like a 360-degree sunset.

The Equipment You Need

The right equipment can make a total solar eclipse easier to view, more detailed and safer to photograph.

1. Certified Eclipse Glasses

For most people, eclipse glasses are all the equipment you need. Unlike ordinary sunglasses, certified eclipse glasses use specialized filters that block almost all of the Sun’s intense visible and invisible radiation. When choosing a pair, look for products that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard and purchase them from a reputable manufacturer or supplier.

Before using them, inspect the filters for scratches, tears, holes or other damage. If the viewing material is damaged, replace the glasses. You should wear your eclipse glasses whenever you are looking directly at the Sun during the partial phases.

This simple approach can be preferable for many and more accessible than complicated equipment. You can focus entirely on the changing sky without worrying about camera settings or telescope alignment.

2. Solar Binoculars

If you want more detail than eclipse glasses provide, solar binoculars can be an excellent next step. Binoculars offer magnification while maintaining a relatively wide field of view, making it easier to find and follow the Sun. With proper solar filters, you can see sunspots and other features during the partial phases.

Purpose-built solar binoculars are convenient because their filters are integrated into the optical system. However, you should not try to make ordinary binoculars safe by simply holding eclipse glasses over the eyepieces. Concentrated sunlight passing through binoculars can overwhelm an improperly placed filter. Any solar filter used with binoculars needs to be designed for the instrument and securely attached to the front of the optics.

3. A Dedicated Solar Telescope

A solar telescope can take the eclipse experience to the next level. Dedicated solar telescopes are designed specifically for observing the Sun and can reveal details that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye. For example, hydrogen-alpha equipment uses a specialized filter to block most of the sunlight, allowing you to safely see the Sun’s chromosphere and revealing details such as solar flares, prominences and dark filaments.

However, a telescope requires more preparation than eclipse glasses. You need to understand its filters, practice aiming it safely and make sure every component is appropriate for solar observation. Never assume that a regular astronomical telescope is automatically safe for looking at the Sun. A proper solar filter must be specifically designed for the equipment and securely positioned at the front of the optical system.

4. Camera and Solar Filter

If you want to photograph an eclipse, a camera with a telephoto lens can produce great results. For most people, a camera that offers both 4K video and high frame-rate settings will deliver the optimal mix of picture quality and affordability. 

However, the most important accessory is not the camera body or lens, but the solar filter. During the partial phases, a proper solar filter should be securely mounted over the front of the camera lens. This protects the camera’s optical system and prevents dangerous amounts of sunlight from reaching your eyes if you are looking through an optical viewfinder.

Additionally, you can use a tripod, as it provides a stable platform and makes it easier to maintain a consistent composition while the Sun moves across the sky. If you plan to photograph totality, learn the timing of the event beforehand. Once totality has actually begun, the solar filter can be removed for the brief period when the Sun’s bright surface is completely hidden. 

5. Smartphone

You don’t need an expensive camera to capture the fun and excitement of a solar eclipse. Your smartphone can be a great way to record the experience and save memorable moments to look back on. Instead of focusing on getting a close-up shot of the Sun, use your phone to capture how the world around you changes during the eclipse. The sky may darken, the light may take on an unusual quality and shadows may look different.

You can also photograph the landscape, your surroundings and friends or family watching the eclipse. These pictures can tell the story of the event and help you remember what it actually felt like to experience a solar eclipse. If you want to photograph the Sun itself, make sure you use a proper solar filter designed for your smartphone camera. Never look at the Sun through an unfiltered camera view, as this can seriously damage your eyes.

Choose the Gear that Enhances the Experience

Whatever you choose, safety comes first. If you want to watch, certified eclipse glasses are all you need. For a closer view, you can use a solar telescope. If you want photos, a camera with a front-mounted solar filter allows you to capture stunning images. Never use regular sunglasses or improvised filters. With the right equipment, you can enjoy the eclipse safely, notice details and preserve lasting memories.
