Star Wars’s massive movie franchise pales in comparison to its gaming empire. People have been making games set in a galaxy far, far away almost as long as video games have been a thing. Many are also among the most beloved titles out there, so it pays to pay attention to upcoming Star Wars video games.
2024 has already seen a handful of Star Wars titles, and more are on the way. While we don’t have official release dates for everything yet, here’s a glimpse at what’s to come.
5 Upcoming Star Wars Video Games
1. Knights of the Old Republic Remake
Arguably the most exciting upcoming Star Wars video game is the Knights of the Old Republic remake. The original KOTOR is still available on Steam — and even the Steam Deck — but it’s hard not to get amped up about a modern-day version.
Details are scarce, even though Saber Interactive announced it back in 2021. We don’t have a release date or gameplay info, but it will be a PC and PS5 exclusive. There was a rumor that the remake got stuck in development, but Saber has since reassured fans that it’s still an active project.
The original Knights of the Old Republic offers an incredible balance between exciting combat, an engaging story and that classic BioWare morality system. Expect the new version to remain much the same in terms of story but with updated visuals, a larger galaxy to explore and hopefully some quality-of-life improvements.
2. Star Wars Eclipse
Another hotly anticipated upcoming Star Wars game is Quantum Dream’s Star Wars Eclipse. The studio’s previous works — notably Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human — have met mixed reviews. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how their signature interactive storytelling approach works in the Star Wars universe.
Quantic Dream first announced Eclipse in 2021 but hasn’t given a release date yet. It’ll be set in the “High Republic” era, before the movie prequel trilogy, in the Outer Rim. The studio has also revealed that the title will include some combat despite its earlier games being mostly dialogue-centric.
Games with the visuals and complexity and Quantic Dream’s level tend to take a long time to make. Consequently, there could be a bit of a wait for this one, but more details should emerge within the year.
3. Star Wars Jedi 3
Now we move into the as-of-yet-untitled upcoming Star Wars video games. The most exciting of these is Respawn’s third entry into the Star Wars Jedi series.
Star Wars Jedi Outcast and Jedi Survivor were both beloved, so it stands to reason that the third will follow in those footsteps. While EA hasn’t announced many specifics about the action RPG, it has confirmed it will conclude the series, capping it off as a trilogy in typical Star Wars fashion.
It’ll probably be a couple of years before Jedi 3 comes out. That gives you plenty of time to pick up the first two if you haven’t played them yet and dive into the story of Cal Kestis.
4. Skydance’s Star Wars Game
Another untitled but promising game on the horizon is Skydance New Media’s take on the series. Skydance — the multimedia studio behind movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Annihilation — announced it was making a Star Wars game in 2022 but hasn’t announced much else since.
One bit of info they have released is that Amy Hennig will lead the project. Hennig was the creative director of the Uncharted series, so this title could be one to watch.
Skydance’s foray into Star Wars will be an action-adventure title, placing it right up Hennig’s alley. Expect thrilling action sequences and a cinematic storytelling experience, if Uncharted is anything to go off of.
5. Bit Reactor’s Star Wars Strategy Game
The fifth and final announced Star Wars game so far is a strategy title from Bit Reactor. Bit Reactor is a newcomer to the gaming scene, but its staff has previously worked on Civilization, Gears of War and XCOM — one of the best strategy games series in recent memory.
Like the Skydance entry, there isn’t much information out yet about this game. We know it’ll be a strategy game and Respawn Entertainment will handle the production. What’ll it be called, when will it be set and when will it release? That’s all still unclear.
It’s hard to say too much about a game we don’t know much about from a studio with no previous work. However, Bit Reactor’s employee’s prior experience should give you some confidence in this title’s quality.
Recent Star Wars Video Games You May Have Missed
Those five entries are all the upcoming Star Wars video games we know about so far. However, if you’re itching for something now, here are some recent releases you may not have played yet.
Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars Outlaws released on August 1, 2024, for consoles and PC. As the franchise’s first true open-world game, there’s a lot to sink your teeth into here.
As you’d expect from the title, Outlaws centers around the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars universe. You’ll build a team for the perfect heist, work with or butt heads with classic Star Wars gangs like the Hutts, fly between worlds and even enjoy some unreasonably tasty-looking street food.
Some people say Outlaws feels a little stale and uninspired. However, if you love the Star Wars universe enough or don’t need a groundbreaking experience, it’s definitely worth playing.
Star Wars: Hunters
For something a little more casual, check out Star Wars Hunters. This title also launched in August 2024 and is free to play.
Hunters is an arena-based hero shooter, a la Overwatch and Valorant. Playable characters span familiar alien races but are all original to the game — don’t expect to play as Boba Fett or Greedo. While it may feel a little simplistic, it’s easy to get into and offers hours of engaging multiplayer gameplay.
Don’t Miss These Upcoming Star Wars Video Games
There have been so many Star Wars video games over the years that it’s hard to keep track of them all. The coming years seem to continue that trend, so there’ll be no shortage of sci-fi games across genres and platforms to keep you entertained. Stay up to date on these titles to catch new info and release dates when they come out and immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe.
