Best Subreddits to Browse When You’re Bored

December 16, 2025 • Shannon Flynn

Feeling bored while waiting in line or riding public transport? Reddit is an excellent platform for browsing content that can be informative, entertaining or otherwise interesting. With thousands of subreddits to explore, you are likely to find one to enjoy during life’s dull moments.

Subreddits Explained

Reddit is a collection of community forums, known as “subreddits,” centered around virtually any topic imaginable. Within these groups, users can share content and interact with others via upvoting, downvoting or commenting. Subreddits often have their own rules and culture to be familiar with before you post anything.

Whether you wish to interact with users or simply browse, you can search for specific subreddits or check out the “Home” or “Popular” pages to discover content. Once within a subreddit, posts can be sorted by popularity and time frame.

General Subreddits

If you’re unsure where to start with your subreddit scrolling, here are three popular ones to explore when you’re bored.

r/AskReddit

This general subreddit is an open-ended question-and-answer page for anything that users can think of. As of publication, the forum has 655 thousand weekly contributors and 17 million weekly visitors. Example questions are:

  • What’s a rule you were taught as a kid that you later realized was completely made up?
  • What’s the best book you’ve read?
  • What free things online should everyone take advantage of?
  • What profession doesn’t get the respect it deserves from society?

r/Aww

r/Aww is the go-to subreddit for cute and cuddly animal pictures and videos. Users often share moments captured of their pets playing, relaxing or posing for the camera. You might see a new cat exploring the Christmas tree for the first time, a crow waiting patiently for snacks or a dog wearing a graduation cap after completing training.

r/Me_IRL

On the humorous side, r/Me_IRL is a collection of SFW, relatable posts and memes. For example, a user shared an illustration of a cowboy riding through a dark, snowy night, with a caption of “Winter fans be like, ‘Ahh yes, 6 PM” to poke fun at the time change. Another popular post features an image of two identical tuxedo cats, accompanied by a funny story about a man finding his lost cat twice.

Educational Subreddits

Browsing Reddit can be equally amusing and educational. Below are some to start with.

r/Science

The latest scientific discoveries are discussed on r/Science. It shares peer-reviewed research related to astronomy, biology, health, medicine, neuroscience, psychology, social science and more fields. You might find an article and accompanying discussion about the introduction of domestic cats in Europe or the increasing percentage of adults with cognitive disabilities in the U.S.

r/DataIsBeautiful

Enjoy the visually pleasing diagrams, graphs, charts and maps of r/DataIsBeautiful. A top-of-all-time post shares an animated map of “Trending Google Searches by State Between 2018 and 2020.” Most of the data visualizers come from cited sources, but some posts are created by users. For example, a user shared a pie graph titled, “Wanna Know Somefing?” detailing the common things their child says after this initial phrase.

r/AskAnthropology

r/AskAnthropology is an educational and thought-provoking subreddit about the human species. You might read about what early humans ate or gender roles in pre-agricultural societies, among many other concepts. Additiosnally, there are similar educational question-and-answer subreddits, including r/AskEngineers and r/AskPhysics

Tech-Savy Subreddits

To learn about technological advancements, news and tips, check out these well-known subreddits.

r/Linux

Reddit is a great platform for learning about operating systems and software. r/Linux keeps browsers up to date about Linux developments and press announcements. For Linux tech support, you’ll want to check out /r/Linux4Noobs or /r/linuxquestions instead.

r/ArtificialInteligence

This forum has over 400 thousand weekly visitors dedicated to all things AI-related. It shares the latest technology updates and other news involving AI infrastructure. Considering that experts believe AI could be worth $1.33 trillion by 2030, following this subreddit is a great way to stay informed about the trending topic. Reddit also has subreddits dedicated to specific AI models, such as r/ChatGPT and r/ClaudeAI.

r/BuildAPC

On this subreddit, you’ll find community-driven deals and guides about PC gaming and building computers. Posts discuss the benefits of switching to PC from console gaming, the rising prices of random access memory (RAM), choosing a suitable graphics card and other topics interesting to PC enthusiasts. The subreddit doesn’t allow promotional or misleading advice, so many users find valuable information by scrolling r/BuildAPC.

Entertainment Subreddits

Most television series, sports teams and musical artists have subreddits for fans to discuss new media. Here are some of the overarching entertainment subreddits.

r/Books

Find discussions about authors, books, genres and publishing on r/Books. Some of this forum’s top posts of 2025 were about a surprising book ban, how Mary Shelley’s grief inspired Frankenstein and the importance of reading to children, especially in the digital age.

r/Music

Proclaimed to be Reddit’s #1 Music Community, r/Music shares the latest news about artists, songs, culture and more. For instance, one post details how Billie Eilish called out billionaires at the WSJ. Innovator Awards, and another post shares that Kendrick Lamar became the rapper with the most monthly Spotify listeners after his 2025 Super Bowl Halftime performance.

r/Movies

r/Movies is a great spot to read about movies and film. There are trailer discussions for upcoming releases, discussions about well-known directors and movie suggestions. You might even be able to read interactions with celebrities. For example, actor Benedict Cumberbatch hosted a verified “Ask Me Anything” event on the subreddit in November 2025.

Niche Subreddits

Reddit wouldn’t be complete without its strange and niche communities. Here are some subreddits worth checking out:

  • r/HaveWeMet consists of users pretending to live in the same fictional town.
