Location sharing makes it easier to meet up with friends and keep tabs on loved ones. As useful as these tools are, you don’t always want others to know exactly where you are. That’s why it’s worth learning how to pause your location on Find My iPhone. Apple gives you several ways to control your visibility.

Quickest Ways to Pause Your Location on an iPhone

According to a 2022 report, 79% of U.S. adults use location-sharing features on their devices at least some of the time. Apple doesn’t have a dedicated Pause Location button, but you have two easy options.

Method 1: Stop Sharing Within the Find My App

If you only want to hide your location from certain people, you can do so directly in the Find My app. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Tap the People tab.
  3. Select the person you want to stop sharing with.
  4. Scroll down and tap Stop Sharing My Location.
  5. Confirm your selection if prompted.

If you share your location with several people, repeat these steps for each contact.

This method only affects Find My location sharing. Other apps that have permission to access your location, like Maps or Weather, continue working normally.

Method 2: Turn Off Location Services System-Wide

If you want complete control over your location data, you can disable Location Services for your entire device.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Select Location Services.
  4. Turn off the Location Services switch.
  5. Confirm your choice.

Once disabled, every app that relies on your location loses access until you turn the setting back on. Navigation apps, weather forecasts, fitness tracking and photo geotagging may no longer work as expected.

If you only need temporary privacy from specific people, stopping location sharing in Find My is usually the better option.

Does the Other Person Know When You Stop Sharing?

Apple makes this process fairly discreet.

When you stop sharing your location, the other person does not receive a push notification telling them you’ve changed your settings. However, they can tell something has changed if they open the Find My app. Your location will no longer appear in their People list, and they won’t be able to see where you are.

If you decide to share your location with them again later, Apple sends a notification letting them know you’ve started sharing again.

Simply put, someone won’t receive an immediate alert when you stop sharing, but they can notice the change the next time they check Find My, or when you decide to share your location with them again.

Key Privacy Implications of Constant Location Sharing

Your location is one part of your digital footprint, or the collection of information you share while using your devices. Understanding what Find My broadcasts helps you decide when it makes sense to continuously share your location and when it’s better to keep things private.

What Data Does Find My Actually Share?

Many people assume Find My only shows a pin on a map, but it can provide more context than that. Depending on your settings and how you’re moving, trusted contacts may see:

  • Your current location in real time
  • Updates as you travel
  • Your direction of movement
  • Your approximate speed while in motion
  • Your location across Apple apps that support location sharing, like Messages and Maps

Apple encrypts most of this information and lets you choose who can access it. Still, it’s a good idea to understand what you’re sharing before leaving location sharing enabled indefinitely.

The Risks of Unchecked Location Access

Most people only share their location with friends and family they trust. Still, leaving location-sharing enabled for months or years without reviewing your settings can expose more information than you realize.

For example, someone with continuous access may begin to recognize your daily routine. They could see when you leave for work, where you spend weekends or how often you visit certain places. Even if you trust that person today, your circumstances may change over time.

You might also forget that you’re sharing your location with former roommates, old co-workers or acquaintances from years ago. A quick review every few months helps ensure your People list still reflects your current relationships.

Treat location sharing as an active privacy setting. Checking it occasionally gives you more control over your digital footprint without giving up the convenience of Find My.

Beyond Location: Other Mobile Security Threats to Know

Location privacy is only one part of protecting your personal information. Your phone stores messages, passwords, payment details and other sensitive data, making it a valuable target for scammers.

One of these growing threats is an emerging technique called “quishing.” Instead of sending fake email links, attackers use QR codes that lead people to fraudulent websites or downloads. Because QR codes often appear in restaurants and other public spaces, many users may scan them without thinking twice.

Developing good security habits helps reduce your overall risk. Keep your iPhone updated, review app permissions regularly and think twice before opening unfamiliar links or scanning random QR codes. Small habits like these work alongside your location settings to protect your personal information.

Best Practices for Sharing Your Location Safely

A few simple controls can help you enjoy the convenience of Find My while keeping your personal information private.

Regularly Audit Your People List

Take a few minutes every few months to review the people who can see your location.

Open the Find My app, tap People, and look through everyone you’re sharing with. Ask yourself whether each person still needs access. If the answer is no, stop sharing your location with them.

This habit is especially useful after major life changes, like starting a new job, moving to a new home, ending a relationship or returning from a trip. Cleaning up your sharing list keeps your privacy settings aligned with your current needs.

Use Temporary Sharing for Meetups

If you’re meeting friends, attending an event or coordinating travel plans, choose one of Apple’s temporary sharing options instead. When you tap Share My Location, you’ll have the option to share for an hour, until the end of the day or indefinitely.

The first two options work well for short-term plans because they automatically stop sharing after the selected time. They give everyone the information they need without creating long-term access that may no longer serve a purpose.

Take Back Control of Your Digital Privacy

Location sharing is a valuable safety and convenience feature, but it’s worth reviewing your settings regularly to ensure they still match your needs. Take a few minutes to review your settings, as a quick privacy check can help ensure you’re only sharing your location with the people you truly trust.
