What’s the point? Why try harder at work?

Has this thought ever run through your head at work? Maybe you’re in the middle of your post-lunch break procrastination rut, and your inability to focus makes you question everything. You definitely aren’t alone.

Motivation doesn’t come easy — especially at the office. There could be an entire week where you work on a task you don’t particularly care about. Maybe your entire job is something that doesn’t make you happy. These are all reasons why it’s important to remember why you should try harder at work.

You don’t always feel like working hard. No one does. But, you should still do your best to stay motivated at work. Don’t believe me? Here are a few reasons why you should.

The End Goal

The job you currently have might not be the job you want to stay with for the rest of your life. This is why you should set a clear end goal for yourself.

What do you want to do with your life? You might not have the answer right now, which is fine. But you should start thinking about it.

Do you want to start your own business? Get hired at another company when there’s an opening? Make a living through art?

Once you have an end goal in place, you’ll be more motivated at your current job. Your end goal creates a purpose. Now you’re working at your job because you’re saving money to be able to pursue your end goal full-time. Maybe your end goal relates to the company you’re working for, so you have to work hard when any task is given to you.

Friends and Family

Sometimes, internal motivation isn’t enough. The goals you set for yourself just don’t get the job done, and you still find yourself procrastinating.

You need some external motivation, which comes best from friends and family. Basically, make a healthy work-life balance a key motivator.

The driving force behind your hard work can come from others. Maybe you have a kid of your own sitting at home while you’re working. Think about everything they’ll need as they get older. These needs could range from clothes and food to a college education.

Work hard for your family who helped you when times were tough. Do it for your friends who have been there for you through thick and thin.

Make sure you have pictures on your desk. These pictures can be from family gatherings or fun nights out with friends. They’ll help you stay motivated during a tough day at work.

Future Opportunities

Do you like where you work? Do you want to climb the corporate ladder? Are you satisfied with your current position in the company?

Let’s say you just got hired and you’re starting at the bottom of the totem pole. Maybe you really wanted to work for your company, and you had to take a job you didn’t want to in order to get your foot in the door. Whatever the reason may be, you aren’t happy with your day-to-day roles.

You should still try harder at work to impress your boss and receive future opportunities. If a job opens up down the line, it makes sense for the company to hire internally than look to bring new people in. Internal hiring is more cost-effective and prudent for any company, and boosts employee morale. They’ll likely look for someone who is a hard worker and goes above and beyond to complete their tasks.

That’s where you come in.

Since you’re working hard, it makes sense to hire you for the new position. Keep this in mind the next time you’re thinking about slacking off.

Healthy Habits

Hard work doesn’t come out of nowhere. You can’t go from being lazy to working hard in the blink of an eye.

Hard work happens from developing habits.

These habits set you up for a successful day at work. They also improve your mood and give you a healthier lifestyle. Healthy habits have many benefits that positively impact both your professional and personal life.

Finding which habits work for you is an experimental process. Try waking up early, meditating, exercising, eating a healthy breakfast, drinking a lot of water and anything you can think of. You’ll eventually find a routine that works best for you.

These healthy habits will help you try harder at work, while improving your mood, boosting your energy, and making you feel better throughout the day. You can enhance your motivation while improving your life.
