Digital cameras can record for long periods as long as they have sufficient storage and power. Film has a physical limit — eventually, the magazine runs out.
The IMAX film magazines used on The Odyssey could hold only a few minutes of footage, requiring regular magazine changes during production. The production still went through an enormous amount of film. Approximately 2.1 million feet of IMAX film was exposed during the making of the movie.
That gives you an idea of the production’s physical scale. Every foot had to be manufactured, transported, loaded, processed and eventually prepared for viewing. For Nolan, those limitations were worth accepting because of what the format delivers on screen.
The technical appeal of IMAX becomes particularly clear when you consider the story.
The Odyssey follows Odysseus through oceans, islands, battlefields and encounters with mythical creatures. The large IMAX frame gives Nolan plenty of space to show those environments while keeping the characters prominent.
A 70mm IMAX presentation uses a 15-perforation frame and can display the expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, providing significantly more vertical image area than conventional widescreen presentations. That extra space can make a noticeable difference. Mountains can stretch upward, ships can occupy more of the frame and characters can remain surrounded by their environments.
It also preserves the physical characteristics of film. You’re seeing a photochemical image captured on a very large piece of film and projected through specialized equipment, giving the movie a distinctive texture and scale.
The camera is only one part of the production’s technical approach.
Nolan has long favored practical filmmaking, and The Odyssey continues that tradition on a huge scale. The production filmed across six countries, including Greece and Iceland, and used real environments and large-scale physical elements.
The mythical creatures also combine physical and digital techniques. For the Cyclops, the filmmakers used practical components alongside visual effects, giving performers physical elements to interact with while allowing digital work to complete the final creature.
This hybrid approach is important. Practical effects provide physical reference points for actors and cinematographers, while visual effects can expand those elements beyond what can be built on a set.

Shooting on IMAX film only provides the full benefit if the finished movie is projected in a theater equipped for the format. That’s one reason genuine 70mm IMAX screenings are limited.
Only 41 IMAX 70mm locations worldwide were equipped to show The Odyssey in the format, according to Variety. These projectors are specialized mechanical systems that require significant maintenance. Some equipment is decades old, creating challenges around replacement parts and technical expertise.
Projection quality also depends on factors such as brightness, screen size and viewing distance. A projector such as the ViewSonic LS740HD, rated at 5,000 lumens, can maintain clear, vibrant images in well-lit environments, making brightness an important consideration when evaluating projection technology.
That means the technology behind The Odyssey extends from the camera all the way to the theater. The finished experience depends on film stock, processing, printing and specialized projection equipment working together.
That’s ultimately the most interesting question.
The technology is impressive, but its purpose is to support the filmmaking. The Keighley camera lets Nolan combine IMAX’s huge image with intimate dialogue scenes.
