Is the Switch 2 Pro Controller Any Good?

Our team tested the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and it feels like a luxurious piece of equipment. It has a nice heft that the previous model lacked. This sentiment falls in line with many of the comments people have about this sequel console. Generally, everything feels — and is — more expensive. 

Somehow, it fits even more nicely in the hands, ergonomically speaking, than its predecessor. It features a satisfying matte finish in certain areas, giving its texture a unique feel that sets it apart from other major controllers. 

During our time with it, the additional GL/GR buttons, which rest behind the main grips, were noticeable. They are not mapped to anything by default, but gamers can customize their gameplay with them if they desire. We found that it was easy to accidentally press these buttons while using the controller, so it may take some getting used to if you assign them a specific purpose. Otherwise, you may accidentally put pressure on them. 

The joysticks also offer great mobility, feeling slick and smooth without compromising precision. The buttons provide enough feedback so that the controller doesn’t feel snappy or cheap, as well. 

Ultimately, we were satisfied with the playtime we had with the Switch 2 Pro Controller. It has a refinement that off-brand options may not offer, though the price tag is definitely a barrier for entry. Additionally, it is awkward to have a button — the C Button — effectively locked behind a paywall. This is also on the Joy-Con 2s, but it is worth noting.

The Joy-Con 2s are larger than their predecessors, making them fit more naturally into people’s hands — for as unnatural as their shape is. However, your hands may thank you for using a more ergonomic controller.

How Long Does the Pro Controller 2 Last?

It lasts around 40 hours without charging, depending on the intensity of the software being used. As the controller ages over time, this will naturally shorten. Regardless, the time is still impressive. The Joy-Con 2s have a shorter runtime, but if you have both, there should never be a moment when you’re without a controller.

Is it Safe to Use a Controller While Charging?

You will have no safety concerns if you want to play games while charging. It does not affect the battery or pose any electrical risks to do both at the same time. Additionally, the USB-C cable that comes with the controller is long, making it comfortable to use.

When people discuss Switch controllers in any capacity, you will inevitably hear someone say “drift” or “drift stick.” This mostly refers to the Joy-Cons, and it refers to a phenomenon that happens after extended mechanical wear on the joysticks.
