Over 2,000 U.S. companies are working to develop AI, and there are no signs of development slowing down. If anything, more AI startups are emerging, and more research is needed to bring AI to its full potential. AI can innovate the industries that serve our economy and improve our lives in numerous ways. Below, we’ll provide a brief overview of AI and nine American companies developing artificial intelligence.

Brief Overview of Artificial Intelligence

According to Statista, AI refers to certain machines’ capabilities to replicate or simulate human, intelligent behaviors. This could mean analyzing data or even making decisions or judgments.

The history of AI dates back to philosophers mulling over the idea that some form of automation or mechanical men have existed or could exist. Years ago, the concept of AI originated in computer science and has rapidly evolved in the last decades. As it has developed, more use cases have come about. AI use cases can be found in just about every corner of the world and across various industries.

For example, consider digital voice assistants like Siri or Alexa. Much of their functionality design revolves around AI. When you ask Alexa a question, the technology synthesizes it, breaks it down and evaluates it to provide some meaningful, intelligent response.

Major tech companies like Microsoft, Google and IBM have issued thousands of AI patent applications. In addition, AI-related startups are earning dozens of billions of dollars each year. This figure highlights just how much is invested in AI research and development.
