Artificial intelligence (AI) is a fast-growing field that has the potential to change every aspect of our lives as it continues to revolutionize. AI involves using computer systems to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence such as decision-making, perception and problem-solving. There are several types of AI, each with unique capabilities and applications. Here are the four types of artificial intelligence and their functionalities:

1. Reactive Machines

Reactive machines are the simplest form of AI and they cannot store previous experiences or learn from them. They are designed to respond to specific inputs in a predetermined manner. For example, a chess-playing computer that only analyzes the current board position and makes the best moves based on a preprogrammed set of rules. Reactive machines cannot think outside the specific task they are designed for and cannot apply previous knowledge to new situations.

Despite their limitations, reactive machines have several useful applications. For example, they are used in robotics to control specific movements and in automated systems that need to respond quickly to particular inputs.

2. Limited Memory

Limited memory AI builds on reactive machines by incorporating the ability to store previous experiences and use them to make decisions. This type of AI is commonly used in applications such as speech recognition and language translation. Limited memory AI uses machine learning algorithms to analyze and process large amounts of data and it can learn from this data to make better predictions and decisions.

For example, a virtual assistant such as Siri or Alexa uses limited memory AI to recognize and respond to voice commands. The assistant can learn to recognize specific patterns and provide more accurate responses as it receives more data.

3. Theory of Mind

Theory of mind AI is a more advanced type of artificial intelligence that can understand and interpret human emotions, beliefs and intentions. This type of AI can analyze and interpret human behavior and make decisions based on this analysis. Theory of mind AI has numerous applications in health care, social robotics and education.

One example of the theory of mind AI is a social robot designed to interact with elderly patients in a health care setting. The robot can interpret the patient’s emotions and respond appropriately to provide comfort and support.

4. Self-Aware AI

Self-aware AI is the most advanced form of AI and has the ability to understand its existence and limitations. This type of AI is still largely theoretical, but it has the potential to revolutionize the field of AI in the future. Self-aware AI could adapt and learn from new experiences, making it much more versatile than current AI systems.

While self-aware AI is still in the early stages of development, researchers are exploring its potential applications. One possible application is in developing autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars, that can learn and adapt to new situations in real-time.

Understand the Types of Artificial Intelligence

While there are four types of artificial intelligence, it is essential to note that Artificial General Intelligence, Artificial Narrow Intelligence and Artificial Super Intelligence are not one of them. They, however, are the types of learning in AI. By understanding the different types of artificial intelligence, we can better appreciate their capabilities and potential applications.
