Life can get you down, and we can all use a bit of inspiration now and then. Some days it feels like the best option is drawing the blinds and burrowing deeper into your blankets, far away from adult life. And while we’re all guilty of doing this from time to time, planning a few amazing activities can get you out of bed and back into the world of the living.
After all, life is for the living, and you might as well be living to the fullest! Here are a few ideas to get you started.
1. Rise and Shine
Five in the morning is a strange and beautiful time — and one most people are missing. Waking up a few hours ahead of the rest of the world has its benefits. You get to watch the sun come up and acclimate to the day as everyone else is just rolling out of bed, splashing water on their faces and grumbling about work.
If you plan to live life to the fullest each day, you’re going to want to start early: you’ll be amazed how much more you accomplish in those first dark hours.
2. Keep a Creative Project on the Back Burner
The easiest rut you can fall into is that of the dead-end worker. The vast majority of us hate our jobs, and that isn’t changing any time soon.
However, by taking on something you are truly passionate about — from a tricky puzzle to Bob Ross artwork — you can get a little more out of everyday life. Coming home from work and having a passion project to pour yourself into takes the sting out of the 9-5, and will help you feel you’re living life to the fullest.
3. Stay Present
It’s hard to look into your past without experiencing a bucketload of cringe. Anything from driver’s license photos to memories of high school prom can take us on a fun little trip down memory lane, and back to the days of our awkward youth.
However, cringing over the past is an activity best saved for your deathbed. Until then, try to stay optimistic and in the present; you’ll have plenty of time for regrets at a later date.
4. Nurture Those Relationships
Maybe you have friends back home you haven’t called in a minute. Maybe there’s someone at work — a friend or a crush — you’ve wanted to take out for drinks. Maybe you’ve been so busy sitting on the couch and watching reruns of Friends that you haven’t had the time for either.
Identifying and pinpointing the relationships that matter the most to you can be difficult, but thinking about who you’ve spent the most time with and who you’d like to devote more time to can be very telling. Find some time for the people you’ve always liked.
5. Gamify, Don’t Lamify
Taking time to focus on an individual task — and treating its completion as a quest — will get you through each day feeling you’ve accomplished something. Some days you’ll spend cleaning or rinsing the mountain of dishes in your sink, and these tasks can use all the pizzazz you can find. Turning them into a game or a quest can keep you away from the mind-numbing boredom of reality.
6. Read Up on Happiness
Human happiness and fulfillment have been the study of countless philosophers and thinkers over the centuries. Taking some time to study up on human happiness — especially from other cultural perspectives — can be very enlightening.
Religious or philosophical texts may not be your standard fare, but there are plenty of examples of overwhelming human happiness in fiction and biography as well. Find something suited to your needs and read away. You’ll quickly find yourself emulating the best lessons.
Get Happy, Chump
Hating your job isn’t a good reason to hate your life. By keeping a creative project on the side, as well as other distractions and perspective-changers, you can seize the day every day!
By simply asking “What if I [insert hopeful accomplishment here]?” you can build a life that you genuinely enjoy being a part of.
