Do you feel like you did nothing all day? It’s 11 p.m. Netflix is telling you it will start the next episode in twelve seconds, but you muster up enough willpower to turn it off.

You collapse into your bed, but you aren’t tired at all after spending the entire day binge watching two seasons of Orange Is the New Black. You start to think about everything you wanted to do today but didn’t. Maybe you wanted to do some yard work or get started on the book you’ve always wanted to write.

The feeling of regret washes over you. Next thing you know it’s 2 a.m. and you are still wide awake.

Falling asleep is difficult when you feel like you did nothing all day. However, a good night’s sleep is essential for a productive tomorrow. Here are five things you can think about that’ll help you fall asleep.

1. Everything You Accomplished That Day

Although it might seem like you wasted the day, there must’ve been something you accomplished. It might be a victory as small as sending an email or calling one of your crazy relatives. It’s not the most groundbreaking achievement, but you did something you’ve been meaning to do for a while.

Thinking about what you accomplished during the day gets you in a positive mindset and reduces stress before going to bed. This helps you fall asleep faster and get more quality sleep.

It’s easy to focus on things we didn’t do, because that list could be endless. You will be more relaxed and susceptible to sleep when you reflect on the tasks you completed during the day.

2. Visualize Tomorrow’s Success

You probably lose sleep after a wasted day because you are stressed about all of the responsibilities you have to deal with the following day. This stress keeps you up at night and has an impact on how you perform the next day.

Visualization is a powerful technique many successful people use. Many people attribute their success to visualizing the outcome before it happens. This technique also gets you into a positive mindset that you will succeed at whatever you want to accomplish.

Visualizing tomorrow’s success before going to bed will help relax your mind. Instead of worrying about the terrible things that could go wrong, you should be concentrating on everything that will go right. This will get you ready to be productive tomorrow, and it will help you get better sleep.

3. What You Are Grateful For

Some days are tougher to get through than others, especially when you feel like you didn’t get much work done.

It’s important you remember all of the things you are grateful for, whether it’s family members, friends or something in your life that makes you laugh. When you take time before bed to remember what you are grateful for, you will sleep longer and better.

Every night before going to bed, spend five minutes thinking about what you are grateful for. You will notice these five minutes will not only make you happier, but they also will help you sleep as well.

4. Positive Memories

When you think about positive events that have occurred in the past, you will be more relaxed. Maybe you can think about a great date or the time when you hit the game-winning home run for your little league team.

These comforting memories will take your mind off of the horrible day you had, and they will make it easier for you to fall asleep.

5. Everyone in Your Life

More likely than not, there are people in your life who support you. These people can be your parents, friends, siblings or co-workers. They have been there for you through the ups and downs, and they are always there for you when you need them.

Think about these people and how thankful you are to have them in your life. Appreciate the fact that you have the privilege of knowing these individuals. The thoughts of these people will relax you before bed and make falling asleep much easier when you know whatever happens, you will always have these people in your life.

Do you feel like you did nothing today? By using these techniques, you can help turn what seemed like a wasted day into a peaceful evening, priming you to be more productive tomorrow.
