Have you ever looked back on your past, kicking yourself for not doing things differently? For ages, the older generations have tried to pass on wisdom and guidance to the younger ones. Sometimes, the younger generations would listen. Other times, the youth would be stuck in their own ways.

Either way, there’s so much valuable information for younger people — valuable information that can improve your life and make it happier. These nine lessons are things I wish I knew when I was younger.

1. Relationships Won’t Make You Happy

OK, they can. But you need to be happy with yourself if any sort of relationship is going to work out.

Communication and self-acceptance are crucial to relationships. If you have a “things I wish I knew” list, this should be one of the first ones to practice.

2. Keep the Positive People Around

You’re going to run into a lot of people who want to bring you down. Some of them may not even do it intentionally. Maybe it’s because a relationship isn’t working properly. Maybe they’re afraid.

Whatever the case, life is too short to keep around the people who don’t lift you up and push you. This is one of the things I wish I knew and used years ago.

3. Learn When to Say “No”

A lot of people are going to want a lot from you — teachers, salespeople, bosses, friends. They’re all going to be vying for your time. While it’s important to maintain friendships and do your work, know that saying no is needed in this life.

If you need a break from friends for a night, tell them you don’t want to go to the club. Learning how to say no is one of the best things you can do. It’ll make you happier and ease your mind. You don’t have to take on the entire world.

4. Inaction Is Worse Than Rejection

When people think about failing, they think it’s the worst thing in the world. In fact, sometimes people think it’s the end of their world. But failure is a good thing. It can be learned from, and it shows you’re trying.

Inaction, however, is worse. Inaction means you aren’t even trying. That’s bad. Always try.

5. Know That This Will Pass

Sounds enigmatic, right? Well, it’s simple and true. Every situation you’re experiencing will pass.

Have a bad day at work? It’ll pass. Are you in physical pain? It will eventually pass. Keeping this in mind will help you get through some of the hardest times of your life.

6. You Aren’t the Center of Attention

It’s easy to get flustered and feel embarrassed about a mistake at work or out in public. The truth of the matter is that people probably didn’t even notice. Whatever it was, other people were probably focusing on their problems and lives.

This can be a relief to most people to learn. Always remember this.

7. Focus on What You Can Control

This is huge. So many times, people stress over things they simply can’t control. You can’t control whether people like you. You can’t control the weather. You can’t control what other people think of you.

What you can focus your energy and time on is improving yourself and improving your life every day. Follow this piece of advice, and you’ll lead a happier life.

8. Expand Your Comfort Zone

This is hard to do, but change always is. Widening your comfort zone will allow you to grow as a person.

It’ll make you wiser to other cultures and help you to learn things about yourself you never knew about. It’s important to always learn throughout your life, and following this step helps you do this.

9. Breathe

This can get you through a lot of hard times. Stress, work, school and relationships may pile up on you.

Learn to take a second and step away from time to time. Step away and take a breath. Breathe in, and breathe out. Stop and look around you. Take it all in — the good and the bad. This helps your body, and it also calms your mind and reminds you to relax and slow down.

Life goes fast. Take the time to listen to those who have gone before you. They know what they’re talking about. They can help you avoid some of the pitfalls common in the younger crowd — and help you make the most of every day.
