If you want to keep an eye on your home, no matter where you are, or you want to round out your collection of smart home tech, you have a wide range of smart security cameras to choose from.

These are five of the best security cameras on the market in 2020. Across the market, there’s something for everyone — regardless of your budget or current smart home setup, there’s a camera that will help you keep your home secure.

1. Arlo Pro 3: The Best Security Cameras Overall

Arlo Pro 3 is a great foundation for any home security system. The security camera’s 2K resolution makes for some extraordinarily crisp security footage and the additional features — like a siren and colored night vision — make the Arlo Pro 3 one of the most well-rounded smart cameras on the market. This camera will work both inside the home and out. As a result, it can do just about anything you need it to.

2. Wyze Cam Outdoor: Best for Outdoors

The Wyze Cam Outdoor is battery-powered and weather-proof, meaning that it will work on just about any outdoor location.

The camera is both easy to set up and use, making it a great option for those who don’t have a lot of experience with smart home tech, or desire to troubleshoot their new camera.

The biggest draw of the camera, however, is likely its price point — at just $50 for the Outdoor Start Bundle, which adds a weatherproof case and battery power system to the $20 indoor Wyze Camera, is one of the cheapest smart cameras out there.

3. Canary Pro: Best for Smart Home Setups

The Canary system is billed as a “complete security system in a single device,” and offers features that make it a great complement to other smart home devices. If you want to limit the security portion of your smart home system to just one device, the Canary Pro is probably the best option available.

In addition to monitoring motion inside your home, the Canary Pro also includes environmental sensors that track temperature, humidity and indoor air quality.

According to the Canary website, the Pro’s air quality tracking detects pollutants including dust, ethanol, iso-butane and carbon monoxide.

The biggest downside of the system is that the Canary Pro won’t work outdoors. However, you can invest in the Canary Flex, which is built for outdoor use, if you want an additional Canary to monitor the outside of your home.

4. Google Nest IQ Cam: Best for Quality Audio and Video

The Google Nest IQ Cam offers high-quality video and audio, as well as outdoor and indoor models.

If you have a Google Nest Aware subscription, you’ll also get a range of advanced features — including intelligent alerts, programmable activity zones and stored event history. This makes the IQ Cam great for any smart home owner who has already invested in other Google Nest tech or a Google Nest Aware sub.

5. Arlo Video Doorbell: Best for Real-Time Recognition

Like most other top-of-the-line video doorbells, the Arlo Video Doorbell provides high-quality video and audio, a 180-degree field of view and, of course, a doorbell.

One of the biggest advantages that the Arlo video doorbell has similar cameras is its smart vision technology. Where most video doorbells will just use motion sensors, Arlo employs a special face-recognition algorithm. This means that if you have a non-human visitor at the front door — like a neighborhood cat, a squirrel or a bird — and the system can’t detect a face, you’ll receive a different kind of alert notification.

If you want to cut down on unnecessary alerts, this feature makes the Arlo Video Doorbell a good option.

Honorable Mentions for the Best Smart Security Cameras

The Google Nest Hello is probably the next-best video doorbell available. If you have a Nest Aware subscription already active, you’ll be able to take advantage of 30- or 60-day video storage and additional smart features — at a price point that’s slightly cheaper than Arlo the Video Doorbell.
